Switching from Spotify to Tidal -- A 30 Second Review

So, I finally decided to switch from Spotify to Tidal. This wasn’t because of Joe Rogan, though the Rogan dust-up served as a reminder that I had been intending to switch. The reason is that Spotify doesn’t fairly compensate the artists whose music it sells. Why artists aren’t allowed to name—or at least influence—the price of their own products, I’ll never understand.

So, I made the switch. Here’s my review:

  1. Bringing over your music is easy. There are a number of services that will import your playlists. If it’s a lot of playlists and songs (mine was 10K songs), you’ll have to pay $5 for it.

  2. Better sound quality. When I was listening to Tidal, I thought, “Does this sound better or am I imagining things?” As is turns out, I was not hallucinating (for once!). Tidal’s Hifi setting produces music at more than 3X the rate of Spotify’s highest setting.

  3. Cost about the same. We had a family plan at $14.99/month on Spotify and it’s the same cost on Tidal.

  4. Slower App. Because the sound quality is better, it means the audio files are much bigger. This results in a less responsive app and occasional buffering delay between songs. So, if you need the music for a party or some presentation, you should download it ahead of time.

And that’s it. Really enjoying Tidal.
